CHP assets transferred to the Treasury

The Grand National Assembly passed the law on the transfer of the assets of CHP to the Treasury on December 14, 1953. Objecting to the decision on the grounds that the law was unconstitutional, İnönü left the Assembly with CHP deputies. Speaking in response, Adnan Menderes said, “If the nation agrees that this is a mistake, we will bravely pay for that mistake at the ballot box three months from now.”

As the Ministry of Finance demanded the transfer of assets by the evening of December 29th, the last issues of Ulus and Son Havadis newspapers and Karagöz journal were published. Renowned journalist and writer Peyami Safa defined the law enacted by the majority votes of the Democrat Party rule as “The Law of Terror!”
