CHP loses the 1954 elections

In the general elections held across Turkey on May 2, 1954, CHP was sorely defeated and the Democrat Party won 57.5% of the general votes. This was the highest percentage any party had reached in the history of the Republic. Due to the political system, DP captured 490 seats in the Grand National Assembly, leaving merely 31 seats to CHP despite having taken 35 percent of the votes.

During this new period of the Grand National Assembly, Celal Bayar was reelected president and Adnan Menderes formed the government. The 1954 defeat caused quite a stir within CHP. Significant amendments were made to the by-laws on July 26th at the 11th general assembly of the party; İsmet İnönü was appointed president and Kasım Gülek was elected general secretary.
