Ömer İnönü passes away

Ömer İnönü was born in İzmir in 1924 as the oldest son of Mevhibe and İsmet İnönü. Upon graduating from Ankara Gazi High School, he completed his graduate studies at İstanbul Technical University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. After training in the U.S. for a year, he was briefly employed at the Directorate of Highways as an engineer. After that experience, İnönü worked in the private mining sector for the rest of his life. He was one of the cofounders of Cement, Ceramic, Soil, and Glass Industry Workers’ Union of Turkey.

Ömer İnönü was among the passengers of the first Turkish airplane hijacked on March 3, 1972 to demand the release of Deniz Gezmiş and his comrades from prison.

He married Engin İnönü in 1952. Engin and Ömer İnönü had two sons named Hayri and Eren and five male grandchildren: İsmet, Ömer, Mehmet, Murat, and Münci. Engin İnönü died on January 1, 2004. Ömer İnönü passed away in İstanbul, shortly after the death of his wife on March 2, 2004.
