Think and study

Based on his personal observations and experiences, İsmet İnönü’s physician Prof. Dr. Zafer Paykoç describes him as follows:

İnönü did not like cliché answers with no scientific explanations. When I could not diagnose what the problem was, I would ask for time to study the case, which often pleased him.

Once, for example, I began giving him Heparin injections for his heart condition. He called me to say that he was suffering from intense pain and burning in his feet five to ten minutes after each injection. I found no abnormalities with his feet during the physical examination. I told him that I suspected no connection between the medication and his pain. Indeed, I was not aware of any such side effects of this medication that we prescribed very often.

When the same thing occurred the next day, I apologized. We stopped the injections and the pain subsided. My research through medical journals revealed that people with allergic reactions could, albeit very infrequently, suffer from such nerve pain as a side effect of the medication.
