İnönü: “CHP should not leave its fate in my hands”

In the address he delivered at the CHP Party Council on March 28, 1962, Prime Minister İsmet İnönü said, “It would be wrong to see İnönü as the guarantee of the regime. I am eighty years old.”

İnönü’s one hour-long speech was deemed by members of the Party Council as one of the most beautiful addresses he had ever given. Dividing his speech into four sections as external affairs, internal politics, economy, and inner party issues, the General President addressed members as follows on the issue of safeguarding the future of the party:

There are distinguished individuals within CHP. It is crucial to overcome egos, set aside personal and petty disputes, and gather around these people to guarantee the future of the party. I would like to see that while I am still alive. That is the most important issue.
