Student protests in İstanbul

The Incidents of April 28th, which transpired at İstanbul University İstanbul and culminated in the deadly shooting of university student Turan Emeksiz by a policeman, are cited among the important motives behind the coup d’état of 1960.

The incidents began when police opened fire on students gathered to protest the Investigation Council of the Democrat Party. A student of the School of Forestry, Turan Emeksiz died in the events during which many students were injured. Trying to protect his students, President Prof. Sıddık Sami Onar was assaulted and dragged on the ground.

The day the incidents occurred is recorded in history as “Bloody Thursday.” After this incident, Prime Minister Adnan Menderes blamed college professors of provoking the youth and began to refer to them as “Kara Cübbeliler” (The Dark-Cloaked Ones).
