The Great İnönü Run

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Battle of İnönü victory, the “Cross-Country Race of Turkey” came to be organized as “The Great İnönü Run” as of 1941.

Cross-country races had initially begun with the participation of merely six regions in 1937. However, once the race was restructured as the İnönü Run, it evolved into a grand organization that included 50 teams and athletes from 42 different regions. Held on a track of 7,500 meters, the race was run in a different city every year with separate categories for men and women. Athletics races continued until the 1950s, after which they were interrupted.

Today, “İnönü Koğusu” or the “İnönü Race” refers to the prestigious derby organized with the participation English thoroughbreds of ages three and up.
