Metin Toker is sentenced to prison

It was a troubled time of harsh statements between Prime Minister Menderes and CHP President İnönü. Newspapers were being censored and journalists were being intimated by prison sentences.

Known for its closeness to CHP, Akis magazine editor in chief and İnönü’s son-in-law Metin Toker was also sentenced to prison for a year on November 30, 1958 for the alleged defamation of Nihat Erim, who was acting as advisor to the government.

Although he was a proponent of CHP, Prof. Erim was providing international legal advice to Adnan Menderes on the Cyprus issue at the time.
