Özden İnönü marries Metin Toker

While she was an assistant at Ankara University’s School of Letters, Özden İnönü traveled to İstanbul upon the invitation of a friend and met Metin Toker there. At the time, Metin Toker was still in school and writing articles for the daily Cumhuriyet. Their courtship continued in Paris during Metin Toker’s studies and in Edinburgh, where Özden İnönü sojourned for a thesis program.

Upon his return to Turkey, Metin Toker began releasing the weekly magazine Akis in 1954. At the time, İsmet İnönü was in opposition. Özden İnönü and Metin Toker were married on February 9, 1955. The wedding ceremony was held at the Türk Ocağı (Turkish Hearth) building. Following the highly crowded civil ceremony, a private reception was given in their honor at the Pink Pavilion. The joke of the day was that Metin Toker was still busy editing news until half an hour before the ceremony and that he would be taking his typewriter along on his honeymoon.
