Attempts to restore democracy after the coup

Following the October 15, 1961 elections, President Cemal Gürsel had assigned Malatya Deputy İsmet İnönü with the task of forming the government on November 10, 1961 and as the first coalition government in the history of Turkish democracy, the CHP-AP government was proclaimed on November 20th.

It was evident that the coalition of two parties at complete opposite political ends would not be a simple union. Indeed, the newly formed government faced frequent tensions due to the discord between the two parties. As expected, the partnership of AP, the self-proclaimed heir of the Democrat Party and CHP, which had fought against DP rule for a decade, did not survive long and the coalition was dissolved on May 30, 1962.

On June 2, 1962, Cemal Gürsel once again assigned İnönü the task of forming the government. İsmet İnönü thus established his 9th and Turkey’s 27th government on June 25, 1962 with New Turkey Party (YTP), Republican Peasant’s Nation Party (CKMP), and independents. However, as stability was not fully restored, Turkey entered a tumultuous political period after this date.
