İnönü attends Kennedy’s funeral

After 35th President of the U.S. John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Prime Minister İnönü flew to the United States on November 24, 1963 to attend his funeral. İnönü was present at the funeral held on November 25th alongside Minister of Foreign Affairs Cemal Erkin and 52 other representatives of foreign states. İnönü had never traveled to the States before and this was his first trip abroad since 1945; coupled with his advanced age, his journey to the States caused quite a surprise.

Moreover, the withdrawal of his coalition partner from the government during İnönü’s absence left him in a difficult situation. By the time he returned to Turkey, a complex political setting was expecting him.
