Farewell to military service

After having been promoted to lieutenant general by the Grand National Assembly following his achievements during the Great Offensive, İsmet Pasha had left for Mudros (Mudanya) to discuss ceasefire. Upon Mustafa Kemal’s request, İsmet Pasha left active duty in the army on October 28, 1922 to preside over Turkey’s Lausanne delegation and assumed the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs. However, his place in the Turkish Armed Forces was preserved. He was promoted to full general in 1926 and retired from the army on June 30, 1927.
