First step towards sugar factories

On April 5, 1925, the Grand National Assembly passed the “Law on the Rights and Privileges Granted to Sugar Factories,” which encouraged local sugar production and offered private entrepreneurs state protection to establish sugar factories. The law prepared the necessary groundwork for the establishment of a sugar industry in Turkey.

Following the enactment of the law for the encouragement of the sugar industry, the foundations were first laid for the Alpullu and Uşak sugar factories. As the first sugar factory of Turkey, Alpullu began production on November 26, 1926. Inaugurated on December 17th of the same year, Uşak Sugar Factory followed suit. Sugar production in Turkey increased considerably once the Eskişehir and Turhal factories went into operation in 1933 and 1934, respectively. All the factories in question were gathered under a single roof once Sugar Factories of Turkey, Inc. was founded in 1935.

Sugar production and consumption finally reached an equilibrium for the first time in 1938. As of this date, Sugar Factories of Turkey took under its wings a total of 30 factories scattered across different parts of Turkey.
