Turkey’s voice “Anadolu Agency” is launched

As the War of Independence surged on, Anadolu Agency was launched on April 6, 1920 to have the voice of the National Struggle heard across the country and the world from a single point. This was also a way to take precaution against foreign news agencies broadcasting false reports against Turkey.

Halide Edip Hanım and Yunus Nadi Bey gave the agency its name. The establishment of the agency was announced to military and civilian authorities through a circular letter; furthermore, Mustafa Kemal informed the entire nation with a signed telegram.

In its first bulletin issued on April 12, 1920, the agency solicited support from the public and local governments to have their broadcast heard even in the remotest corners of the nation:

Needles to say, the news and information received today should be read and made known by as many people as possible. Therefore, we kindly appeal to your love for and dedication to your country and nation to help distribute the news we broadcast every day by posting them on black boards at telegraph office doors, and to print and send them to all towns and villages.
